The occurrence and duration of seizures were monitored during 283 ECT sessions in 39 patients with endogeneous depression. Stimuli were delivered bitemporally, and either sinewave or brief-pulse stimuli were used. The duration of the seizure was monitored by the convulsive movements of the forearm to which a cuff had been applied, and inflated above the systolic blood pressure. The method was found to be simple and reliable. Keywords

The definition of syndromes in psychiatry has changed over time, although the diseases have been known since antiquity. We review the description of certain syndromes that may be considered similar to the contemporary definition of mania from the ancient period till Kraeplins formulation of manic depressive insanity. Prevailing notions of etiology, and scientific knowledge, guided these earlier classifications. Kraeplin formulated his description on the basis of astute clinical observations in the preceding centuries. Keywords

The breakthrough for dental laser systems came in the mid 1990's. Among the various laser types with corresponding wavelengths, diode laser systems quickly began establishing themselves as compact, competitively priced and versatile additions to the dentist's repertoire, predominantly for performing soft tissue applications. The advantages of laser use include a relatively bloodless operating field, sterilization of the wound site, minimal swelling and scarring, reduction of surgical time and less postoperative pain to the patient. It should appeal to dental professionals seeking to optimize the procedures they currently perform and expand the number of services they offer. Keywords

Background: Cytokines are pivotal to the pathogenesis of periodontal disease and may be used as markers in diagnosis. Systemic diseases and smoking are considered risk factors that have been associated with periodontal disease progression. Cytokine production may also be influenced by smoking and systemic diseases leading to an imbalance that disturbs the host-parasite relationship. Aim: The aim of the present study was to determine and compare the levels of salivary IL-8 in diabetics, smokers and hypertensive patients with chronic periodontitis. Materials and method: A total of 80 patients with chronic periodontitis were included in the study. They were divided into four groups:20 controls, 20 diabetics, 20 hypertensives and 20 smokers. Unstimulated saliva samples were collected at first visit and IL-8 levels were measured by enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Results: It was found that as compared to control group, diabetic group presented with higher levels of IL-8 whereas hypertensive and smoker groups presented with lower levels of IL-8. After statistical analysis it was found that this alteration was significant in smokers group only. Conclusion: It can be concluded from the study that the levels of inflammatory biomarkers in chronic periodontitis patients are altered with systemic factors. Keywords

To overcome the limitations of the bandwidth and storage, the images must be effectively compressed for efficient utilization of available resources such as storage and bandwidth of communication media. The objective of this paper is to provide the performance analysis and comparison of image compression using Discrete Cosine Transform (DCT) and Wavelet Transform (WT). The performance analysis and comparison is carried out on equal footing. The choice of transform used depends on a number of factors, in particular, computational complexity and coding gain. In present scenario, the most effective and popular way to achieve efficient compression of images are based on either Discrete Cosine Transform (DCT) or Wavelet Transform (WT). The paper discusses important features of both the discrete cosine transform (DCT) and the wavelet transform (WT) in compression of still images. DCT represent an image as a superposition of cosine functions with different discrete frequencies i.e. the basis of Discrete Cosine Transform (DCT) is cosine functions, while the basis of Wavelet Transform (WT) is wavelet function that satisfies requirement of multi-resolution analysis. The influences of image contents of variety of images at different compression ratios are assessed. The test images selected for experiment are of different frequency content, size and resolution. Two quality measures are used: Peak Signal to Noise Ratio (PSNR) and visual quality of image. In this paper, we have analyzed visual quality of image at a compression ratio of 50:1 using both DCT and WT (at decomposition level 5) for image compression on the variety of test images. Our analysis reveals that for images, the wavelet transform outperforms the DCT in both peak signal-to-noise-ratios as well as in visual quality of image. Keywords

The waste produced in the course of healthcare activities carries a higher potential of infection and injury than any other type of waste. The present scenario of bio-medical waste (BMW) management in Indian hospitals is grim. However, there is an emerging concern regarding bio-medical waste management, particularly as a result of notification of Bio-medical Waste (Management and Handling) Rules, 1998 which makes it mandatory for the healthcare establishments to ensure that such waste is handled without any adverse effect to human health and environment. Proper handling, treatment and disposal of bio-medical wastes are important elements of healthcare office infection control programme. Correct procedure will help protect healthcare workers, patients and the local community. This article also discusses about various types of wastes, their management and the status of bio-medical waste generated in Bhopal city. Keywords

In this paper, we devise data allocation algorithms that can utilize the knowledge of user moving patterns for proper global data allocation in a mobile computing system. By employing the data allocation algorithms devised, the occurrences of costly remote accesses can be minimized and the performance of a mobile computing system is thus improved. The issue we addressed here is to allocate right data at right location while minimizing communication cost and response time of the network. Keywords
